Well, controversy is too strong a word I think, but to quote Iris Murdoch, "Art is for life's sake...or else it is worthless," so poetry it is not a "closed end-in-itself," which I think the remarks here about the unfolding of experience and/or openness actually demonstrate. Why cling to the tired, "its own end" doctrine. Such a doctrine may indeed be killing the discipline as much as any of Winters' assumptions.
